Use Mailotte in the mail app you already have

Plenty of private email providers ask you to give this up. Proton Mail reaches standard mail apps only through its Bridge application, a desktop app on a paid plan, on a computer that has to be running (the full comparison). Tuta documents no IMAP, POP3 or SMTP at all — its own apps or nothing (comparison). Mailotte's servers can speak the protocols, so your phone's built-in mail app is enough.

Server settings

Username: your full Mailotte address. Password: an app password, not your account password. There is no plaintext port — 143 and 110 are closed on purpose, so a mail app cannot quietly fall back to an unencrypted connection.

First, create an app password

1. Open Mailotte and go to Settings → Mail clients.
2. Create an app password and name it after the device — "iPhone", "Thunderbird at home" — so you can revoke exactly that one later.
3. Copy it. It is shown once: Mailotte keeps only a verification value afterwards, so nobody, including us, can read it back to you.

You need a verified account to create one. Revoking an app password disconnects the device that used it and nothing else.

Set up your app

Thunderbird

Thunderbird reads Mailotte's autoconfig file, so it fills in the servers itself.

1. Account Settings → Account Actions → Add Mail Account.
2. Enter your name, your full Mailotte address and your app password.
3. Click Continue. Thunderbird finds the settings on its own; leave IMAP selected and click Done.

If it ever asks you to configure manually, use the table above — the values are the same ones the autoconfig serves.

Apple Mail (macOS)

Add it as an Other Mail Account, not as an iCloud or Exchange account.

1. Mail → Settings → Accounts → +, then choose Other Mail Account….
2. Name, full address, app password → Sign In.
3. When it says it cannot verify the account, fill in the incoming and outgoing hosts from the table above and sign in again. That prompt is normal the first time.

Account Type stays IMAP unless you specifically want POP.

iPhone and iPad

The built-in Mail app connects directly — there is no Mailotte app to install and nothing to run on a Mac first.

1. Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account → Other → Add Mail Account.
2. Name, full address, app password, description → Next.
3. Choose IMAP, then enter the incoming and outgoing host from the table above. Both are the same host.

iOS asks for the outgoing server's username and password even though it labels them optional. Fill them in, or sending fails later.

Android

Works with the built-in Gmail app, and with K-9 Mail / Thunderbird for Android.

1. In Gmail: Settings → Add account → Other, then your full Mailotte address.
2. Choose Personal (IMAP) and enter your app password.
3. Accept the server settings it proposes, or correct them against the table above.

K-9 Mail and Thunderbird for Android find the settings automatically from the same autoconfig file Thunderbird uses.

Outlook (desktop)

Outlook can connect to Mailotte over IMAP — this is about the Outlook app, not an Outlook.com address.

1. File → Add Account, type your full Mailotte address, then choose Advanced options → Let me set up my account manually.
2. Pick IMAP and enter the hosts and ports from the table above.
3. Enter your app password when prompted.
